Research focuses:

Viruses of marine protists, viral ecology, virus evolution

Project summary:

My thesis aims to isolate a virus infecting ecologically important marine unicellular protists for which viruses are unknown. The virus will be characterized in terms of the genome, phylogenetic position, and environmental representation. This study will highlight previously unknown virus-host linkages, provide insights into the ecological role of viruses in the ocean based on discoveries of novel virus genes, expand our knowledge of the evolutionary history and phylogeny of the virus world, and shed light on the abundance and diversity of viruses in marine environments.

Research focuses: Viruses of marine zooplankton

Research summary:

My thesis focuses on identifying the viruses of crustacean zooplankton and uncovering their impacts on host populations in the ocean. Zooplankton impact biogeochemical cycling and transfer energy from primary producers to larger animals, but much of their mortality remains unexplained and very few pathogens have been identified. I aim to uncover new viruses of copepods, amphipods and euphausiids, place them in a phylogenetic context and investigate their dynamics through time along the Pacific Coast and in the northeast Pacific Ocean.
